When you want to work at home with your spouse, it is important to plan ahead and have some ground rules. In this article, we will discuss 5 tips on working at home with your spouse. 

1. It is very important to be willing to take constructive criticism.  While this is an important life skill in any instance, recognize that it is often difficult to take from your spouse.  Recall from our previous discussion that this ties in with finding a specific time to discuss business issues, preferably during the daytime office hours.

2. You also need to learn how to discuss business issues separately from marital and family issues.  In order to have a thriving business and more importantly a healthy marriage, it is vital to learn how to do this well.  You will inevitably have differences of opinion.  Be especially careful when you discuss those differences as they are related to the business and have a standing rule that you will not drag in marital issues. If marital issues do arise, agree on a separate time that you can talk about those things. 

3. Plan a night away from the home or office to strategize about your business.  Do this every few months and make it a priority to look back and evaluate and check your goals.  We have done this in a variety of ways:  enjoy a nice meal and discuss upcoming promotions/goals, take your computer to quiet bar or coffee shop, go to the local winery and strategize.

4. Go on date nights where you do not talk about any business.  This is a little harder to do when you both enjoy your work. Pick things to do that you both enjoy that do not involve work. Just enjoy your spouse and have fun!

5. Go to business conferences together that spur you on in your business.  Stay an extra day to strategize how you can put into action what you just learned or partnerships you just made. You tend to party less when your spouse is there, so you are more likely to stay more focused.

While it can be very fun and rewarding to work at home with your spouse, it is important to expend the extra effort to make sure you always have a healthy relationship, both during and outside of work.
