Should You Protect Your Ebooks With Security Software?
Published by Stephen Beck

In a previous article I discussed the idea of adding security measures to protect your ebooks. One of the ideas you can use is a password protected membership site. However, there is also software that can help with this problem.  You have to decide on an individual basis what works best for you.

You can find protection software for your digital products on Google by searching for PDF protection, or ebook protection. My take on it is, quite frankly, it is expensive, and I do not think it is worth the money.  I would rather focus on selling as many copies of my product as possible rather than worrying about the small percentage of people who are going to rip me off. I can either focus on this small percentage with my time or I can use my time to create new stuff. I think creating new products to sell is a much better use of my time. So I prefer to filter everyone into a membership site in order to protect my products.

I like the concept of selling ebooks for a set price, for example $27, and then filtering people into my $19.97 per month audio club. Nobody gets the information from my audio club unless they are on a special list where they are paying me, and I know who is paying me. I also have a higher-level subscription that I call my ?Gold Membership?.  The folks in this program pay me more each month than in my audio club, so I can afford to buy something like aMember, which is my membership software. AMember keeps track of user names and passwords and only allows those in there that are supposed to be in there.

In the end, if we are only talking about a $27 ebook, I do not worry about a lot of security. I am not really concerned about security here. Just tell people up front, ?Hey, this is not a free Ebook. If you are reading this and you did not pay for it, do the honest thing and delete it from your hard drive.?

However, when it comes to an audio club, or a membership, they have security built in. Since it is an on-going expense, or even if it was a big product (a physical product or even a digital product that is in my membership site), then I can limit who has access. In short, I recommend going the route of a membership site rather than purchasing expensive ebook protection software.
